Naval Dockyard Apprentice School Introduces New Short Courses
05 Aug 2026 · By Administrator
NDAS has introduced 16 new short courses in dockyard and marine trades — focused, standalone programmes open to Naval personnel and civilian applicants now registering for training.
The Naval Dockyard Apprentice School (NDAS) is pleased to announce the introduction of 16 new short courses, expanding the School's training offering beyond the existing multi-month apprenticeship programmes. These courses are designed to give Naval personnel and civilian applicants a faster, more focused route into specific, in-demand technical skills.
Each short course is a standalone programme built around a single practical skill area, drawing on the same dockyard-based instruction and hands-on workshop culture that defines NDAS's regular training. Applicants can register for a short course independently of the Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced Apprentice Course pathway.
The newly introduced short courses are:
Crane Operations and Safety — Safe crane operation, pre-operational inspection, load assessment, signalling, and lifting procedures.
Shipboard and Shipyard Rigging Operations — Selection, inspection and use of ropes, wire ropes, slings, shackles and hooks for safe lifting.
Mechanical Draughtsmanship and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) — Engineering drawing, dimensioning, tolerances, and CAD for mechanical and marine applications.
Industrial Valve Installation, Repair and Maintenance — Installation, dismantling, inspection, testing and maintenance of gate, globe, ball, butterfly and check valves.
Electric Motor Rewinding and Maintenance — Fault diagnosis, dismantling, coil winding, insulation, rewinding and testing of electric motors.
Air Compressor Repair and Maintenance — Operation, fault diagnosis, servicing and repair of reciprocating and rotary air compressors.
Electric Motor Control, Operation and Maintenance — Motor-control systems, contactors, relays, starters, overload protection and basic VFDs.
Marine Pump Installation and Maintenance — Installation, alignment, operation and maintenance of centrifugal, reciprocating and positive-displacement pumps.
Mechanical Shaft Alignment and Bearing Maintenance — Shaft alignment, coupling inspection, bearing installation and correction of rotating-equipment faults.
Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems Maintenance — Components, circuit interpretation, fault diagnosis and maintenance of actuators, valves, pumps and compressors.
Marine Pipe Fitting and Plumbing — Pipe measurement, cutting, bending, threading, jointing, installation and pressure testing.
Welding and Metal Fabrication — Welding safety, material preparation, basic arc and gas welding, fabrication and weld inspection.
Marine Electrical Installation and Maintenance — Wiring, cable installation, protection devices, distribution systems and fault diagnosis.
Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Maintenance — Refrigeration principles, installation, servicing, leak detection and refrigerant handling.
Non-Destructive Testing and Weld Inspection Fundamentals — Visual inspection, dimensional checks and basic NDT methods for weld and structural defects.
Shipyard Safety, Permit-to-Work and Confined-Space Operations — Hazard identification, PPE, permit-to-work procedures and confined-space entry.
Registration is open now. Applicants can visit the Admissions → Register Now page, select "Short Course" as the programme type, and choose their course of interest from the list.
